What It Means
At the battle of Uhud the line broke and the companions scattered. Imam Ali (AS) held his ground in front of the Prophet (ﷺ) when almost no one else would. As his sword turned the day, a voice rang out from the heavens, Lā fatā illā ʿAlī, lā sayf illā Dhū al-Fiqār. There is no hero but Ali (AS), and no sword but Dhul-Fiqar. The words name the one who never left his post, spoken not by men but from above the heavens themselves.
